I had a blast trying this out. You can check out the captions to see how my original prompt evolved along the way. All these images? Made with ChatGPT.

The Discovery

Turns out, the more you dial in the details in your prompts, the cooler the graphics you get. But, funny thing, sometimes going all-in on the specifics doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Example 1: Computer Code Horse

Prompt used:

horizontal graphic of a horse made out of computer code
Can you make it a little more abstract?
Can the horse be running?
This will be a background image and I just want machine language used.
It needs to fit into 1600px by 335px.
Can it be in more pastel colors?

Example 2: The Over-Detailed Approach

Here’s a case where I threw in some super detailed prompts:

Please create a digital illustration of an energetic Arabian horse galloping through a lush green pasture. The horse should have a sleek, shiny black coat and a flowing mane and tail. Show the horse in a dynamic pose, with its front legs outstretched and its head held high. The background should depict a clear blue sky with a few fluffy white clouds. Capture the horse’s majestic and powerful nature in a realistic style.

Result: Not quite what I wanted.

Example 3: Abstract Approach

I then tried to do something more abstract, which did turn out better:

Create an abstract digital illustration of a horse in motion, capturing the essence of an Arabian horse galloping through a pasture. Use bold, sweeping lines and shapes to depict the horse’s form, emphasizing its dynamic pose with outstretched front legs and a raised head. Employ a vibrant color palette, featuring shades of black and dark blues for the horse’s body, contrasted with energetic splashes of green and yellow to represent the pasture. Incorporate abstract representations of a blue sky and white clouds in the background, using geometric shapes or loose, expressive brushstrokes. The overall composition should convey a sense of power, freedom, and grace while maintaining an abstract and artistic style.

Still not quite right, so I decided to take it step by step.

The Winning Strategy: Iterative Prompting

Prompt 1: Create an image of a horse running.
Then I built on it:

  • Make this horse look like an Arabian horse.
  • It should be black.
  • Have it running through the desert sands at a full gallop.
  • Can you make it look more like a sketch drawn by hand?
  • Can you make it run full out?
  • Give it a fiery look and its neck is stretched forward.
  • …not literal fire, just an emotionally fiery look.
  • Can you make him look sad?
  • Can you make him look like a Mustang instead of an Arabian?

The Takeaway

For me, the best results come when I build on previous prompts.

And just between us, I don’t think ChatGPT is a big fan of Arabians. 🙂

Lesson learned: Start simple and iterate. Each refinement gets you closer to your vision than trying to nail it all in one massive prompt.
